How to Change the Oil in a 2001 Honda Accord

by Robert Moore

The base-model 2001 Honda Accord is equipped with a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine and a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Honda recommends changing the engine oil and filter every 7,500 miles or 12 months under normal driving conditions. If you usually drive in severe conditions -- dirt roads, extreme temperatures, frequent rapid acceleration and the like -- Honda recommends you change your oil and filter every 3,750 miles or six months. Check your owner's manual to determine which oil-service schedule you should follow. The 2.3-liter engine needs 4.5 quarts of conventional 5W-20 engine oil.

    Items you will need

    • Floor jack
    • Jack stands
    • Socket set
    • Ratchet
    • Oil filter cup
    • Drain pan
    • Torque wrench
    • 5 quarts 5W-20 engine oil
    Step 1

Park the Accord on a level surface and set the parking brake. Lift the hood and remove the oil fill cap. Lift the front of the vehicle and place jack stands under the subframe rails. Lower the vehicle until it rests securely on the jack stands.

    Step 2

Place a drain pan under the oil drain plug. Loosen the oil drain plug with a socket and ratchet or box wrench. Remove the drain plug by hand and allow the oil to drain. Remove the gasket from the base of the drain plug. Wipe the drain plug threads clean and install a new drain plug gasket.

    Step 3

Install the drain plug into the oil pan. Tighten the drain plug to 33 foot-pounds with a torque wrench. Slide the drain pan to the rear side of the engine below the oil filter. Loosen the oil filter with a filter cup and ratchet. Allow the oil to drain into the drain pan.

    Step 4

Remove the oil filter from the engine and drain the remaining oil into the drain pan. Inspect the filter's mating surface and remove the oil filter gasket if necessary. Apply a coat of engine oil to the gasket on the new oil filter.

    Step 5

Thread the new oil filter onto the filter housing until the gasket contacts the housing. Tighten the filter to 16 foot-pounds with a filter cup and torque wrench. If you don't have a torque wrench, tighten the filter until the gasket makes contact, then 3/4-turn more. Remove the drain pan and store it in a safe place until you can dispose of the oil properly.

    Step 6

Pour 4 quarts of fresh 5W-20 engine oil into the engine. Check the engine oil level and add oil as needed to bring it up to operating range. Replace the oil fill cap. Raise the front of the vehicle using the jack and remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to the ground.

    Step 7

Start the engine and allow it to run for 30 seconds, or until the "Oil" light turns off. Shut the engine off. Wait two minutes, then check the level and add oil as necessary to bring the level to the full mark on the dipstick. Shut the hood. Take the used oil and filter to a local repair shop or transfer station for recycling.

    Tip

    • Most local repair shops and parts stores will accept used oil free of charge.

    Warning

    • Never attempt to start the engine without first adding the proper amount of oil.
